Curriculum Vitae

 

Georg Rich was born on 11 November 1939 in Schaffhausen, Switzerland. He studied economics at the University of  Zurich and continued his graduate education at Brown University, Providence, Rhode Island,  which awarded him a Ph.D. in economics in 1969. From 1967 to 1977, he taught economics at Carleton University in Ottawa, Canada. He was promoted to associate professor in 1971 and served as chairman of Carleton's economics department from 1972 to 1974. In 1977, he joined the Swiss National Bank. He was put in charge of research in 1979 and took over the economic studies and research section in 1982. In 1985 he was appointed as director and chief economist, a post which he held until his retirement from the Swiss National Bank in 2001.

In 2002 Georg Rich became an honorary professor of the University of Bern, where he taught until 2007. In addition, he also taught a course at the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies in Geneva and he is operating a consulting business,  named "Rich International Consulting".

Georg Rich was also a postdoctoral fellow at Yale University in 1974, a visiting professor at the Graduate Institute of International Studies in Geneva in 1975 and a visiting scholar at Carnegie-Mellon University in 1989. The following year, the Graduate School of Brown University awarded him a citation for his achievements in the areas of monetary analysis and policy. In 2002, he was a research visitor at the European Central Bank. From 1999 to 2002, he served as president of the Swiss Economics Society. He was also a member of EMU Monitor, a group of academics who assessed regularly the performance of the European Central Bank. He has published widely on monetary matters, including studies on the Eurocurrency markets, Canadian monetary history and Swiss monetary policy. He is the author of a monograph entitled The Cross of Gold, Money and the Canadian Business Cycle, 1867-1913 (1988).

Georg Rich is a widower and lives in Zurich, Switzerland.

Lebenslauf

 

Georg Rich wurde am 11. November 1939 in Schaffhausen, Schweiz, geboren. Er studierte Nationalökonomie an der Universität Zürich und setzte seine Ausbildung anschließend an der Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, fort, an der er im Jahre 1969 promovierte. Von 1967 bis 1977 lehrte er an der Carleton University in Ottawa, Canada. Er wurde 1971 zum Associate Professor befördert und wirkte von 1972 bis 1974 als Chairman der volks­wirtschaftlichen Abteilung. Im Jahre 1977 trat er in die Schweizerische Natio­nalbank ein. Im Jahre 1979 wurde ihm die Leitung der Forschungsabteilung und 1982 des Ressorts Volkswirtschaft übertragen. Im Jahre 1985 wurde er zum Stellvertreter des Vorstehers des 1. Departements und zum Chefökono-men ernannt, eine Position, die er bis zu seiner Pensionierung im Jahre 2001 innehielt.

Im Jahre 2002 wurde Georg Rich zum Honorarprofessor der Universität  Bern   ernannt, wo er bis 2007 unterrichtete. Ferner unterrichtet  er am Institut de hautes études internationales et du développement in Genf. Er betreibt zudem eine Beraterfirma mit dem Namen "Rich International Consulting".

Georg Rich war im Jahre 1974 auch als Postdoctoral Fellow an der Yale University, 1975 als Visiting Professor am Institut de hautes études internationales in Genf und 1989 als Visiting Scholar an der Carnegie-Mellon University tätig. Im folgenden Jahr ehrte ihn die Graduate School der Brown University mit einer "citation" für seine Leistungen auf den Gebieten der mone-tären Analyse und der Geldpolitik. Im Jahre 2002 wurde er von der Europäi-schen Zentralbank als Research Visitor eingeladen. Von 1999 bis 2002 wirkte er als Präsident der Schweizerischen Gesellschaft für Volkswirtschaft und Statistik. Er war auch Mitglied des EMU Monitor , einer Gruppe von Professoren, die regelmäßig die Geldpolitik der Europäischen Zentralbank beurteilten. Er verfügt über zahlreiche Publikationen auf den Gebieten der Geldtheorie und -politik, mit Einschluss von Studien zu den Euromärkten, zur kanadischen Geldgeschichte sowie zur schweizerischen Geldpolitik. Er ist der Verfasser einer Monographie mit dem Titel The Cross of Gold, Money and the Canadian Business Cycle, 1867-1913 (1988).

Georg Rich ist verwitwet und lebt in Zürich, Schweiz.
